Kate and Roger Sampson moved to France in 1992 after spending five years working as hostess and skipper on sailing yachts. This Mediterranean lifestyle left them with a need for sun and the great outdoors, which is what spurred their move to the Languedoc. It was the beauty of Lagrasse and its artistic community that captured their hearts. They created The Riverside Gîtes in 2001.
Roger trained at the Central School of Art. After working in ceramics, he went travelling to South America organising a canoe trip up an unexplored tributary of the Amazon. On his return, he became an outdoor pursuits instructor working with inner city kids. After leading the sailing team, he moved on to skippering charter yachts. Roger now writes music and plays in a band, as well as looking after the gîtes and bike rentals.
Kate went to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and worked as a stage manager, but her wanderlust took her away travelling. In Australia she worked as a ‘jillaroo’ on a cattle station. On her return to England, she bought a horse and rode cross-country from Land’s End to John O’Groats. She also worked as an outdoor instructor with inner city kids before setting sail, working as a hostess on flotilla and charter yachts in the Mediterranean. Kate now works as a Cranio-Sacral Therapist and offers treatments to guests.
Amélie and Eppo are a French-Dutch couple who moved from Berlin to Lagrasse in 2012.
Amélie helps in all aspects of managing the gîtes. She studied at the conservatory of music in Montpellier, sang in her own band in Berlin, and worked as a journalist in Paris for TV and radio. She is now using her creativity to make jewellery and accessories.
Eppo designs and makes tailor-made wedding dresses, evening dresses and costumes for the music/film/theatre industry. You will be walking through his boutique-atelier to get to the gîtes.
